America Reads

The America Reads program was initiated in 1997 to help all children learn how to read independently by the end of the third grade. There are approximately 1200 colleges and universities nationwide that work to improve literacy skills and reading comprehension in these crucial elementary school years.

At San Diego State University we work with kindergarten through third grade at Rosa Parks Elementary School, which is located in one of the most diverse communities in San Diego. We employ over 30 student tutors who work with K-3rdgrades at Rosa Parks Elementary School to provide extra support in the areas of reading and writing.

America Reads Program Goals:

  • To improve reading comprehension
  • To improve reading fluency
  • To improve vocabulary and spelling
  • To provide one-on-one attention
  • To help students develop a positive attitude about reading
  • To motivate students to read on their own
